What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid teaches participants how to support someone who is struggling with their mental health. By the end of the course, delegates will be able to identify the signs of a range of mental health issues, provide reassurance and guide people toward professional help. The course takes place over two days and provides you with an internationally recognised MHFA certificate.
Course content
This course covers the practical skills required by a Mental Health First Aider in the workplace, providing delegates with the confidence and knowledge to support workers who are struggling with their mental wellbeing.
During the course, we cover:
- Why is Mental Health First Aid important?
- What is mental health?
- Symptoms of depression, including risk factors for depression.
- Suicide figures.
- Alcohol, drugs and mental health.
- Anxiety disorders.
- Eating disorders.
- Self-harm.
- Cognitive distortions and cognitive behavioural therapy.
- Crisis first aid after a traumatic event.
- Action planning for using MHFA.
We also provide you with the following resources:
- MHFA manual to refer to whenever you need it.
- A quick reference card for the Mental Health First Aid action plan.
- A workbook including a helpful toolkit to support your own mental health.
- A copy of the Line Managers’ Resource, an invaluable source of advice on how to support an employee experiencing mental ill health.
